I am just back from the Project Arts Center. This was my second attempt at seeing Niche (I arrived 4 minutes late on Tuesday and they wouldn’t let me in). Be warned!
The show is composed of 4 fabulous dancers from a different background and culture expressing and representing life in big cities. Well, I never would have known what’s going on without reading the programm…. The show is just really bizarre, faces look sad and there is no music…. It’s good to focus on your breathing so and to listen to the efforts but don’t expect to be amazed or fascinated.
This show is much more a physical performance than dancing in my opinion. View poster of the show.
About a hundred people were in Dublin’s Temple Bar last night to celebrate West African music and dance with AFO (African drumming band). Next African Party on the 22nd of October, same place-;)

Some great dance moves there-:)

The hot band!
Do you want to improve your ballet postures and your flexibility but you find ballet classes too slow & too quiet? Well Cardio Barre may suit you!
The class combines barre work and light weights with continual fat burning motion. This fitness concept hasn’t been exported from the US yet… Do you think this could be successsful in Ireland? More details on Cardio Barre website.
Lots of people feel very silly or ridiculous when dancing. It may be easy for you to throw yourself to the dance floor every Saturday night but it is not for many of us!
Maybe we think we have to “be able to dance” (whatever that means) or have some kind of dancing background before showing off. Or maybe we are afraid of the image we are projecting!
I understand this feeling of shyness, especially when your friends or some guys at the bar are starring at your mooooves. So let me give you a tip…
Go as often as you can to see gigs. When the crowd starts to be euphoric, jump in the middle of it and then start moving. Let the music be your guide, don’t control your body and remember the most important: SMILE! You will see it’s not so difficult-:)
Next opportunity to have a boogie; AFO gigs on Wednesday nights in Turks Head in Dublin. Anyone can follow the African rythms-:)
Dance Research Forum Ireland is a non-profit, international & inter-disciplinary society for scholarship of dance, in Ireland and abroad.

The more people involved in this, the more the Forum can contribute to the development of dance research and education in Ireland!
Great Flamenco dance classes with Joyce Richarson from Flamenco Fire! Learn the rythms of this very energic dance style in the Dance House every Wednesday. Joyce is teaching with live music, it’s very good fun and entertaining-:)

Joyce is also performing and organising workshops over Ireland, check her website for more details.

See you around!
It happened last Wednesday. I was wandering in Temple Bar, looking for some entertainment after work… I suddenly remembered the Fringe Festival was on! Great, exactly was I needed! I jumped on the first program I found and selected a dance show with the Irish Modern Dance Theatre company.
I met the IMDT for the first time last year in Athlone for a dance festival. VARIETY, this is definitely the best word to qualify this group composed of talents from across the globe. They are not all super dancers but all are excellent theatre characters! My only worry at this time was the theme of the performance; the sickness… I still can remember the weird noises and the bodies moving as if about to die and all…
This time, the group was a bit smaller, but still composed of very different performers. I saw some great dance moves and jumps for 50 min. But once again the theme of the performance was very upsetting: dementia… I was sitting a few centimeters away from the dancers pretending to get sick on the floor or running around like mad (some saliva about to fall out of the mouth…). I felt uncomfortable.
Of course I appreciated the charm of the dancers and the huge amount of emotion and energy put into this performance. Even though, I believe that the beauty of the dancing was damaged by the game of insanity. Maybe did I just not get it? I don’t know; there was a definite awkwardness around it.
Maybe do I always expect to relax when watching a show and refuse to be disturbed? Does dancing has to be pretty and make us dream all the time? I am opened to discussion-:)
